Hi everyone! Happy summer Friday!
I’ve been on the mend from a cold that felt way more dramatic than that. Whenever I get sick, I see it as my body reminding me to slow down. Now, after a few days of rest, I’m fully appreciating the perfect eighty-five-degree and sunny days we’re having at the peak of vacation season. My friends are currently texting about what to pack for various trips and late-summer weddings, so I’ve got swimwear on the brain.
As an L.A. girl, I’ve always had an overflowing swimsuit drawer: One pieces, tops, bottoms, and cover-ups. I’m fascinated by the design process of swimwear, how materials are sourced, and what makes a good suit. A few years ago, I did a limited-edition collection with Frankie’s Bikinis, and I still have some of the pieces.
For my honeymoon in Hawaii this past June, I packed a few of my tried-and-true suits, but also invested in some new pieces — including a set from Devon Windsor Swim that I love!
Devon and I crossed paths a million years ago, and I’ve admired her from afar for years. When I had the idea of digging into swimwear for this issue, she was the person I wanted to interview. I sent her a DM, and she graciously agreed to give us some insight into swimwear design.
Inside the issue: how Devon got into swimwear design in the first place, my favorite pieces from her line (which happen to be her favorites too!), a typical day in the life running a small business, practical advice for anyone swimsuit shopping, and a little BS vacation edit at the end. Enjoy!
Hi Devon! Thanks for taking the time to chat! You’ve had an incredibly successful modeling career — what inspired you to launch into swimwear design?
Thanks so much for including me in this piece! As a model, I always knew my end goal was to grow beyond just modeling and create something I could truly call my own. Swimwear has always been a passion of mine, and I saw a gap in the market for pieces that felt unique and special without breaking the bank. Today’s girl wants more than just a bikini for the whole summer — she’s curating a fresh, standout look every time she heads to the beach. I wanted to design collections that make that possible while still feeling timeless and elevated.
I’ve always been a fan of fashion design. I know swimwear is its own beast — I have some insight, but tell me about your process as a designer; what is the pipeline from inspiration to a piece landing online?
I think most people would be surprised by how long it takes for a piece to go from an idea to actually landing online. From the initial concept to a sketch, then a sample, and finally into production, our collections are usually designed six months to a year in advance. Swimwear is unique; it’s similar to lingerie in terms of fit and construction, but you’re wearing it in public while showing so much skin. It has to make you feel confident, and it has to fit like a glove. We can spend months perfecting the fit of a single style because that’s my number one priority. My ultimate goal is to make women feel as comfortable and confident as possible in something that, for many, can feel very vulnerable to wear.
I recently bought the Lilah bikini top, Lio bottom, and matching Leena skirt, and I’m obsessed! I wore the set throughout my bachelorette, wedding weekend, and honeymoon. Can you tell me the story behind that specific design? What inspired it?
Wow, that’s one of my absolute favorite sets too! We pull inspiration from everywhere: travel, fashion, people, even little moments in everyday life. For this particular style, we came across a vintage piece in the runway archives that had a similar concept. From there, we adapted it to make it swim-friendly and budget-friendly, while still keeping that elevated, fashion-forward feel. We kept the bottoms simple so the top and skirt could really shine, and we love offering a full look, so adding a coordinating cover-up was a must. It’s one of those sets that feels effortlessly chic but still makes a statement, perfect for a special weekend like yours.
I’m curious, what’s your favorite piece — swimwear or clothing — you’ve ever made and why?
This is such a hard question because every style and collection feels like my baby; each one is truly a labor of love. We pour so much thought, detail, and care into every piece that it’s hard to choose a favorite. That said, I do have a soft spot for some of our more specialty designs, like the Cali Top with the Cici Bottom, or the Lilah Top with the Lio Bottom, you mentioned. Those pieces really embody the unique, elevated-yet-wearable aesthetic I love bringing to our collections.
It’s Wednesday morning. What’s the scene at Devon Windsor Swim? What are you and your team working on and planning for?
I think people would be surprised at how small my team actually is! When we launched in 2019, it was just my sister, my husband, and me doing absolutely everything. We’ve grown so much since then, which is amazing, but we still run things with a very tight-knit team. Right now, we’re putting the finishing touches on our Spring 2026 collection and starting designs for Summer 2026. We’re also planning our Spring 2026 campaign shoot in Mallorca, as well as our line sheet and e-commerce shoots happening in the next two weeks. All of this is leading up to NYC and Paris market [weeks] — so it’s a very busy Wednesday morning!
Are there any universal tips for finding a flattering swimsuit, regardless of body type?
Absolutely! While every body is unique, there are a few tips that tend to work across the board. First, focus on fit above all else; a well-fitting suit will always look more flattering than one that’s just “on trend.” Look for quality fabrics with a bit of stretch and structure so they smooth and support in the right places.
Second, think about balance. If you want to draw attention upward, choose a bold print, interesting neckline, or detailing on top, and keep the bottom simple — and vice versa. This helps create visual proportion, no matter your shape.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of confidence. The most flattering swimsuit is the one you feel amazing in. That’s why I always encourage trying on a variety of cuts and styles, because sometimes the unexpected option ends up being your favorite.
What are your beach or pool must-haves? Let’s pick your sunglasses, hat, bag, and beverage. Do you have a speaker? What’s on your playlist?
I like to keep my beach bag pretty simple and practical. Usually it’s a raffia or straw tote, with one of our DW pouches tucked inside — those come with every purchase and are perfect for organizing. Inside, I keep my essentials: sunscreen, lip balm, a powder face sunscreen for touch-ups, and sunglasses. Lately, I’ve been loving our new DW sunglasses collection — the Portofino is my current favorite style.
I’ll admit I’m not the best at remembering to wear a hat, but when I do, it’s usually a classic straw sun hat.
Music-wise, my husband is always in charge. He brings our Bang & Olufsen round speaker, and our go-to playlist is usually country music (a little unexpected, I know!)
It looks like your daughters are little water bugs! Where are some of your favorite places to shop for kids’ swimwear? Do you have plans to launch Devon Windsor kids?
Yes, they’re total water bugs! Living in Miami, we spend most weekends in or near the water. Funny you should ask, because we may or may not have something in the works for kids for next summer;)
Right now, everything my girls wear is actually custom DW that I make using extra fabric from our collections. It’s become such a fun way to match, and people are always asking when kids’ styles will be available. I’m excited to say I’m working on making that happen!
Thank you, Devon! I loved our chat! Afterwards, I pulled together a little BS Swim edit, below, with a few of my favorite suits and accessories.
TO WEAR: A cozy oversized t-shirt. I was sent this one, wore it three days straight, and promptly bought it in three more colors.
TO MAKE: A Shared Notes for friend updates. One of my best friends is nine months pregnant, and her husband started a Shared Notes to give us updates on her labor and delivery. So smart.
TO READ: “Our favorite bedrooms.” This is fun and top of mind as I’m working on a remodel.
TO EAT: Corn pasta with basil.
TO REMEMBER: Sunscreen!!
TO TAKE WITH YOU: “This August, may the love you give come back to you — multiplied.” -Jillian Turecki

“Thank you so much for making an archive! I joined late, so I’ve missed out on so many past issues since I’m not a heavy social media person. I cannot wait to spend my time reading on the past ones to grab some inspiration for things to add into my daily routine!” -Mimi
